The major project supports Japan’s green transformation and Nippon Steel’s 2050 carbon neutral vision.
Tenova, a leading provider of sustainable solutions for the metals and mining industries, has been selected by Nippon Steel to supply a new Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) for Nippon Steel’s Yawata Area at Kyushu Works. Tenova has teamed up with GE Vernova, whose Direct Feed system will power the Consteel EAF. Once installed, the new furnace will become the world’s most powerful EAF with a heat size of 340 tons, Tenova says. According to the company, this power level will enable the use of high percentages of virgin iron units, which are essential for producing high-quality steel grades. GE Vernova will supply its Direct Feed power system, providing the high-stability power needed for such an installation. According to Tenova, the Yawata project is a landmark investment that combines innovation and sustainability and represents a crucial step in Nippon Steel’s pathway to carbon neutrality by 2050, shifting from blast furnace to EAF steelmaking in line with Japan’s Green Transformation (GX) Promotion Act and the company’s long-term decarbonization strategy.
