Russula will supply one of the largest water treatment plants (WTP) ever built for the metallurgical sector to Big River Steel Works. The water plant is divided into 13 circuits and will treat daily more than 65 million liters (17M gal) per hour. The WTP is composed of a make-up water treatment area, contact and non-contact cooling circuits, an effluent treatment area and an advanced effluent recovery system.
This water treatment plant represents the know-how acquired by Russula over many years and includes new processes such as the effluent recovery system, which applies the latest techniques in water treatment. As a result, the new plant will significantly exceed the environmental requirements and drastically reduce water consumption by recovering the vast majority of the water discharged into the environment.
Consequently, the new modern mill will apply to become LEED® certified. BRS, which has an eco-friendly Russula WTP installed and currently in operation, received this certification back in 2017, and recently received the first-ever ResponsibleSteel™ site certification, which sets a global benchmark for leading practices in environmental, social and governance (ESG) responsibility for steel production.
