Knauf Interfer Cold Rolling GmbH and thyssenkrupp Hohenlimburg GmbH have signed a memorandum of understanding concerning the supply of steel with reduced carbon emissions on 10 August, 2023. The plan is to deliver steel with a considerably smaller carbon footprint thanks to the use of processed scrap metal to the cold rolling mill operated by the Knauf Interfer group starting in 2023. (bluemint® recycled). From the end of 2026, Knauf Interfer will also receive steel from the bluemint® Steel product family, which is produced by a direct reduction process using green hydrogen. (DRA/SAF).
Bluemint® recycled reduces carbon emissions by approx. 60% when compared to conventional hot-rolled strips across all grades and dimensions. Knauf Interfer is thus able to offset product-specific carbon emissions in the category Scope 3. Through the supply and processing of green steel products, the Business Unit Steel, of which Knauf Interfer Cold Rolling GmbH is a part, among other things enforces efficient, tri-modal logistics and short delivery routes due to the advantageous location of several sites.
“Using steel supply agreements, we can secure the supply chains of our customers using green steel. In this dynamically growing sector, Knauf Interfer is able to secure their position, owing also to the close partnership with thyssenkrupp Hohenlimburg, through bespoke solutions, material and consulting competence”, says Domenico Marino, COO and member of the Executive Board at Knauf Interfer SE. “The agreement signed today marks a further milestone on the way to ‘green steel’ and demonstrates our shared commitment to more sustainability and protecting the climate”, says André Matusczyk, CEO of thyssenkrupp Hohenlimburg GmbH.
