The World Steel Association (worldsteel) announces the industry’s 2015 Sustainable Development Charter. The leaders of 75 steel companies around the world have signed the worldsteel Sustainable Development Charter to show their commitment to the seven sustainability principles of the industry. The principles highlight the steel industry’s commitments to improving the social, economic and environmental performance of member organisations.
Edwin Basson, Director General of worldsteel, said: “As an industry this Charter is deeply significant. It outlines our commitment to a sustainable future for all and the difference we can make with steel.
Our members are committed to the future of sustainable steel, for a sustainable society. Our collective belief is that sustainable development must meet the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Quite simply, we each need to take responsibility and act with purpose to achieve the targets we have set for the coming years.
As a group, steel companies and associations around the world came together last week at The World Steel Annual Conference in Chicago where we discussed the challenges facing our industry and the impact of those on the industry’s future. The Charter and the seven sustainability principles are an integral part of meeting and overcoming those challenges now and in the future, and I’m extremely proud of our joint commitment to do better.”
