It’s impossible to imagine modern life without metals, but today’s metal industry is responsible for a third of all industrial greenhouse gas emissions. Dierk Raabe and Martin Palm, scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials in Düsseldorf, are working on a more sustainable way of producing and using metals. Their ideas could completely revolutionise the metal industry.

The trend towards lighter weight and e-mobility as well as the expansion of renewable energy are important drivers of the demand for aluminium. According to Dennis Rheinsberg of IKB Deutsche Industriebank, further expansion of recycling capacities is necessary in order to meet aluminium requirements, improve the energy footprint and reduce carbon emissions.
