GalvanoTechnik Expands Services Portfolio, Adds Nitreg® Nitriding and Nitreg®-C Nitrocarburizing

Family-owned heat treatment company GalvanoTechnik, situated in Lombardy, Italy, has expanded its surface treatment services portfolio to include Nitreg® controlled nitriding, Nitreg®-C nitrocarburizing as well as ONC® in-process oxidation treatments.

NITREX SYSTEM COMBINES 3 TECHNOLOGIES INTO 1 PLATFORM
The company invested in a compact Nitrex system, model NXK-609, configured to process 23.5” diameter by 35.5” high (600mm by 900mm) workloads that weigh up to 1300 lbs (600 kg). The system complies with the temperature uniformity requirements of AMS 2750E, in addition to meeting specifications ASM 2759/10, which make it possible to consistently achieve the required metallurgical and mechanical properties for controlled nitriding. Other advantages of the NXK series include a reduced footprint and a system configuration that combines three process technologies into one platform.

SOLVES ISSUES RELATED TO WEAR AND CORROSION
The move to add nitriding and nitrocarburizing to its portfolio was the result of GalvanoTechnik engaging in deeper dialogue with its customers and identifying these new needs. Six months after the successful installation and start-up of the Nitrex system, the company is now supporting customers in the defense and automotive industries with the full benefit of the Nitreg® brand technologies to solve unique challenges related to wear and corrosion resistance as well as aesthetic surface finishes. Applications range from firearms components, such as magazines and barrels, to automotive components, with recipes tailored to meet the exact requirements of each part. Working with GalvanoTechnik, Nitrex’s in-house experts designed and tested process recipes to find the right match. All control recipes are stored to the Nitrex system process library, and the operator simply selects the process for the specific application and the control system takes over, automatically monitoring and adjusting parameters such as time, temperature, atmosphere composition, Kn nitriding potential, and many more.

Greenfield Extrusion Plant Integrates Latest Nitrocarburizing Technology

The Swiss corporation Alu Menziken Extrusion AG, a manufacturer of aluminum profiles and complex extrusion press products, chose a Nitrex nitrocarburizing system for its new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility on a greenfield site in northwestern Romania.

Nitrex Metal delivered and installed a turnkey NX-815 nitrocarburizing system that incorporates the Nitreg®-C technology for treating aluminum extrusion dies. The pit furnace has overall chamber dimensions of 31.5” diameter by 59” high (800 x 1500 mm) with capacity optimized to nitrocarburize a 3300 lbs (1500 kg) load. The process technology adapts to the application requirements to deliver improved performance of extrusion dies. Tailoring the application’s surface properties has a positive influence on performance metrics like throughput per run and number of runs per die, which, as a consequence, mitigates the cost of tooling. Alu Menziken also chose the Nitreg®-C technology to reduce the possibility of potential failures like premature washout and flaking that degrade the performance of dies.

“With a focus on the environment, Alu Menziken also sought to introduce eco-friendly technologies for all equipment at its greenfield facility. Not only is there a benefit of reduced process gas use with the Nitrex system, the integral high-efficiency neutralizer also helps comply with environmental regulations,” says Marcin Stoklosa, Nitrex European Project Manager.

The modern factory situated in Mediesu Aurit, Satu Mare covers an area of 13 hectares and features the latest equipment for producing extrusions. Inaugurated this past November, the plant produces a range of profile products for aerospace and automotive companies, such as Audi, BMW, Bentley and Daimler, looking for lightweight aluminum solutions.
